The We Want Freedom Campaign demanded the immediate release of LGBTI+ people imprisoned for over 45 days in the “My Family Is Safe” operations and called for indictments to be prepared.
The We Demand Freedom Campaign issued a statement on the situation of LGBTI+ people imprisoned as part of the “My Family is Safe” operations, which began on 12 September. Asking, “LGBTI+ people have been imprisoned for 45 days! Where are the indictments?”, the campaign stated that imprisonment had been turned into a method of punishment.
The campaign included the following remarks in its statement:
“More than 45 days have passed since our friends were detained and arrested in the 12 September operation. There is still no indictment.”
Pre-trial detention has been turned into a form of punishment
The campaign stated that the existence of LGBTI+ people, human rights advocacy and freedom of association had been criminalised, emphasising that pre-trial detention had ceased to be a protective measure:
“We see that existence, human rights advocacy, and the freedoms of expression and association are being criminalised, and that pre-trial detention has ceased to be a precautionary measure and has instead become a method of punishment.”
The statement also criticised the use of “de-gendering” and “obscenity” as grounds for the operations:
“Non-existent charges have been fabricated using concepts such as ‘de-gendering’ and ‘obscenity’, and LGBTI+ people have been openly targeted.”
“Indictments must be prepared immediately, prisoners must be released”
The campaign stated that LGBTI+ people, particularly trans people, are being targeted by the rise of authoritarian policies around the world, and that these policies are being used to conceal social problems and create an atmosphere of hatred and fear.
The statement listed the demands as follows:
- Indictments must be prepared immediately, and charges and cases lacking a legal basis must be dropped.
- Imprisoned LGBTI+ people must be released immediately.
- Hate policies targeting LGBTI+ people must be brought to an end.
