As part of the “My Family Is Safe” operation, authorities requested access blocking for 107 internet addresses and social media accounts, including the X account of the Kaos GL Association and accounts belonging to international LGBTI+ organizations, on grounds of “obscenity.”
As part of the “My Family Is Safe” operation, access blocking was requested for 107 internet addresses and social media accounts. The request cited “obscenity” as its grounds.
The addresses targeted by the access-blocking request include the WhatsApp channel and Google survey form of the LGBTI+ association SPoD, as well as the X account of the Kaos GL Association.
The X and Instagram accounts targeted by the request include those of Patikara, SPoD, GALADER, Amnesty International, LİSTAG, Red Umbrella, the Psychiatric Association, METU LGBTI+, and the Ankara Bar Association LGBTI Rights Center.
Access blocking was also requested for the Instagram accounts of the international LGBTI+ organizations Transgender Europe (TGEU) and IGLYO. Academic Sinan Birdal’s X account was also among the accounts targeted by the request.
Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office emphasizes “obscenity”
In its statement, the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said:
“It has been determined that obscene content was shared through the aforementioned X accounts, other networks and websites, and the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has therefore launched an ex officio investigation into the offense of ‘obscenity’ under Article 226, paragraph 2 of the Turkish Penal Code. Upon examination of the relevant X accounts, other networks, website links and content, it was assessed that the content falls within the scope of Article 226/2 of the Turkish Penal Code No. 5237 and that the posts were aimed at disrupting public order within the country. Accordingly, on behalf of the public, it is requested that access to the URL addresses of the social media accounts, other networks and websites through which the posts in question were published online be blocked, and that the content be removed from publication, separately with regard to both the social media accounts and the links containing the posts, pursuant to Articles 8 and 8/A of Law No. 5651 on the Regulation of Publications on the Internet and Combating Crimes Committed by Means of Such Publications.”
