Five of the six people detained in Kuşadası, Turkey as part of the “My Family Is Safe” operation targeting LGBTI+ people have been arrested.
According to information obtained, six people, including LGBTI+ activists, were detained as part of the operation.
Following police procedures, five of those referred to the courthouse were arrested on allegations of “obscenity” and “prostitution”.
What happened?
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that judicial proceedings had been initiated against 162 people, nine associations and 13 businesses as part of operations carried out in 15 provinces under the name “My Family Is Safe" in Turkey.
As part of investigations conducted under the coordination of the Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Aydın and Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Offices, board and supervisory board members of numerous LGBTI+ associations, including Kaos GL, were detained in early-morning home raids. Searches were conducted at association offices and digital devices were seized.
During the operations, which were conducted over allegations of “obscenity,” “facilitating prostitution” and “violating the Law on Associations,” access to the websites of numerous associations, including Kaos GL, Pembe Hayat, SPoD and 17 Mayıs, as well as the social media accounts of activists, lawyers and journalists, was blocked.
Of the 18 people detained in İzmir as part of the operation, 16 were arrested, while two were placed under judicial control. Those arrested include trans women, LGBTI+ people and dancer Zenne Arif.
As part of the investigations, simultaneous raids were also carried out at nightclubs and massage parlors in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu and Şişli districts.
